Apple Supply Chain and Product Overview | August 2023

September 30, 2023

Key Takeaways:

iPhone Production Forecast:

  • Due to component yield rate issues, we have observed new iPhone production plan may slightly push out from 3Q23 to 4Q23, and we thus adjust our forecast from 51~55M to 45~50M in 3Q23 and 75~80M to 77~82M in 4Q23.
  • Although the iPhone 15 production schedule has been seen pushed out to next quarter, we still expect 3~5M production loss in Y2023 may happen. As a result, we revise down Y2023 new iPhone production forecast from 83~88M to 77~82M.

Proximity Sensor Analysis in iPhone:

  • As we mentioned in Aug’22, we expect Apple may give up InP-based EEL due to production concerns and embrace GaAs-based VCSEL in iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series.
  • Our recent check indicates that Rx may be the bottleneck and Apple may overcome obstacles by using InP-based or new materials with new wavelength 1130nm in iPhone 17 series.

MacBook EMS and Shipment Analysis:

  • We reiterate the forecast of MacBook sell-in shipment in Y2023 may be 17~21M, indicating 15~20% YoY decline.
  • We observe that Foxconn might undertake the assembly of the new 14”/16” MacBook Pro models in Hongfucheng, while the assembly of the legacy Pro models may take place in Hongfujin. However, we check that Quanta may still handle the NPI for the new 14”/16” MacBook Pro models.
