Apple Supply Chain and Product Overview | January 2023

February 14, 2023

Key Takeaways:

iPhone Production Forecast (1H23)

  • After the China’s reopening, we observed that demand for iPhone in January may be stronger-than-expected thanks to the Chinese New Year. We therefore slightly revise up our iPhone production forecast to 61~66M in 1Q23.
  • Compared to iPhone 13 Pro series’ End-of-Life (EOL) plan in Sep’22, iPhone 14 Pro series might face their EOLs in Jun’23, which is comparatively shorter. Thus, we estimate the iPhone production shipments in 2Q23 to be a 15~20% YoY decline.

iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro EMS Allocation

  • Based on our checks, Foxconn may still be the sole supplier in iPhone 15 Pro Max since it has been the first time to apply periscope, which requires more advanced ability in assembling. However, we observed that Foxconn may no longer be the sole assembler in iPhone 15 Pro, sharing part of EMS allocation to Luxshare.

iPad Sell-in Shipment Forecast (Y2023)

  • We see that the total sell-in shipment of iPad in Y2023 may have a negative 8~10% YoY as the market demand may turn weak with disappearing WFH benefits.

Apple’s IT Products EMS Reallocation Plan

  • Due to China’s supply chain disruptions last year, Apple has become more proactively in requesting EMS vendors for IT products to build capacity outside of China.
  • With that, we observed that Vietnam may appear to be Apple’s first choice owing to the supply chain clustering benefit. For example, BYD may have built its new fab site and started manufacturing entry-level models for iPad in Vietnam in 2H22.
